Free Starbucks Iced Coffee

with 116 comments

Free as in… FREE coffee! Works noon-9pm per person per visit. Good until September. Enjoy! Thank Kat for the hookup.

[ Coupon has been taken down since the promo’s no long valid ]

Here is a picture of me enjoying my free coffee. πŸ™‚ 😦
enjoy.jpg

UPDATE:

OK, I know a lot of you don’t believe this is legit (Hell, even I don’t believe it). But, like I say in the comments, this appears to be legit. You can call the Starbucks customer service to verify this. And as I promised, I did a second run from the same Starbucks where I got my free coffee yesterday. Please note that the Barista did say that they normally don’t accept coupons like this b/c it’s a print out. But the odds are you’ll most likely get your free coffee.

P.S. sorry for the jerky motion.

[ Video has been removed from the page as well…Β  ]

UPDATE 2:

Well, we all know it’s going to happen sooner or later. There is no such thing as free coffee! At least not anymore. As someone has pointed out in the comment, Starbucks has stopped the free coffee promotion. So, please DO NOT use the coupon anymore. Hope you’ve enjoyed the freebie. I know I did. πŸ™‚

Here to read more.

  1. What was the promotion associated with this e-mail (in order to make the coupon more believable)?

  2. Coupon was sent out in an e-mail. Just print and take the coupon for a spin. FYI the coupon was forwarded to me from a friend.

  4. Um, that’s very much like the poster they used to promote their ONE DAY promo for free iced coffee a few weeks ago. I worked there seven years and never heard of them emailing out coupons. You can try it though.

  8. It appears this isn’t the first “hoax” regarding fake email coupons for starbucks. Doesn’t sound like it would be fun to be a starbucks employee for the next little while.

It would be funny if it was one day went away, but much like the microsoft and AOL giving out money for forwarding email, this is going to be circulating for a long time, and starbucks counter folks are going to have to tell people that they won’t accept it, or that the customer has been hoaxed. Either way, it’s bad for the employee.

And it’s a 5 minute job to change the exp date on the coupon to make it expire in December, or July. If you want to recreate it to be more believeable, make it a “1 Day Only” coupon for some date in the future.

  9. i recieved this in an email from a friend. i took it to starf*cks and handed it to the counter girl. she asked her manager. he said he hadn’t seen it before, but he’ll honor it this time. i hate starbucks. i think their coffee is gross. they refuse to carry organic coffee. they burn their coffee to mask the fact that it’s the cheapest they can find. however, i was happy to take 2 minutes to cause some confusion, and keep my $2.50 for a crappy cup of coffee. (i did drink it, and it’s not too bad when it’s ice cold and sugared.) keep it up!

  11. I do work at starbucks, and there is no way in hell we would accept this. And ‘starbuck:’ our coffee is brewed on the hour, its definitely not burnt. And that bitterness you have there? That’s your weak taste buds and small penis.

  12. Excuse me rob, but you’re wrong there. The coffee is really bloody expensive and it’s good beans. Several of the beans they carry meet different standards for Organic around the world (one of them, the Sanani, ONLY grows in the wild) but none of them meets the organic criteria for EVERYWHERE Starbucks is sold, so they won’t put the organic label on it. It’s a dumb policy that allows people to claim they don’t have organic coffee, but those people are wrong.

You may have saved some money on the coffee you pretend not to like, but it came straight out of your Karma account if you’re going to go around lying about them.

    27/08/2006 at 12:25 pm

  13. i agree with rob. The coffee always tastes burnt regardless of how fresh they say it is. I only drink their iced coffee ’cause it makes it bearable. about his weak taste buds: if he can taste burnt coffee with weak buds then it must be really badly burned coffee. Or maybe starbucks is gay and puts dirty sanchez sauce in their beans

  14. Wow, Rob, way to stick it to the man! Starbucks will never recover from your ingenius maneuver to screw them out of $0.25 worth of coffee and ice.

  15. I work in a Starbucks, and while there was a one day program for free iced coffee recently (and those were smalls, not the grandes mentioned on this coupon), the Starbucks corporation has said absolutely nothing about this email campaign. This wouldn’t be the first time people have been passing around fake coupons.

A legitimate Starbucks promotional coupon (of which there are a few flying around right now) always mentions a specific drink, and is always for a small. (This is not to be confused with the small brown-back Service Recovery coupons which are good for anything.)

Since the first one I got was yesterday while corporate offices are closed, I haven’t called anybody to find out if this is legit yet, but I highly doubt it. Then again, you can probably use these things for quite a while social-engineering style. Most places probably won’t refuse them, since we’re conditioned to “just say yes” when people get pissed off about something.

  16. After careful inspection this does not appear to be an actual coupon. I am an ex-supervisor of Starbucks and from what I can tell, that so called “coupon” does not have information on it to tell the barista how to ring it up on the register…there are always coupon codes, just to let you know. They have to keep track of all that. Those of you that got away with it more than likely had the blessing of the “Just say yes” policy. The Starbucks website occasionally mails THROUGH postal service coupons to their Starbucks card holders, but I have never received a coupon via email. Just a lil FYI for all you folks out there. Good luck.

  17. oh wow..my apologies..there is actually a barista code on there….I couldnt see it before. My bad. Thats a legit coupon then. But believe me…the employees are gonna know something is up if u keep walking in there with multiple coupons all the time. πŸ˜‰ But with Starbucks flooding the market with a store on every corner…I guess it wont be a problem taking them to other stores.

    Joy

    27/08/2006 at 1:11 pm

  18. Yes, it has a discount code. But no, Seattle wouldn’t have sent it out without telling anyone about it if it were legit.

Conclusion: it’s not. The graphic is exactly the same as the one-day promo, too.

    27/08/2006 at 1:14 pm

  19. and just another note….Ken is correct about most of the drinks always being tall, however, I wonder if that is region specific…I can remember some promotions being grande…but very, VERY few.
Either way…if someone is going to cheat the system that’s their conscience and they have alot of time on their hands.

  25. The “burnt” refers to the roasting of the beans, not whether it is “stale” from sitting too long. You would think a barista would know the difference.

    Tony

    27/08/2006 at 1:50 pm

  26. No, the term for over-roasted coffee is over-roasted. Burnt is what happens to coffee when it sits on a burner too long, like at a diner.

Whatever else this probably-fake coupon has done, its certainly got a lot of people who loathe Starbucks to trundle their butts down there and suffer the horrible torture of drinking the stuff.

I was hoping to get a Caramel Frappuccino, but when the barista tried to enter it in the register, it wouldn’t accept it. So, instead I just got a regular iced coffee.

I’m really not a coffee person (thus my desire to get the caramel frap), so after drinking a bit of it I just threw it out.

  39. Contrary to one guy (John) who said he was a manager at a StarBucks, the coupon DOES tell the Barista how to ring it up. It clearly states when you see it in it’s actual size that the coupon is good for a Grande Ice Coffee drink and is valid through Septemeber 30, 2006. It also contains the StarBucks Coffee Company copywrite and says “All Rights Reserved”. It then says “Barista, please use discount code 113.” So for what it’s worth, it appears to be legit.

  41. i work at a starbucks. Our root policy is just “say yes.” Since the coupon does exist and doesnt expire till the posted date, a print out will still be good because the coupon only advertises the discount. We have discount numbers to plug into the register to discount the drink to $0.00. If the store doesnt know of the discount code, they’ll institute a “RECOVERY COUPON CODE” immediately.

Starbucks is really pushing a policy to “just say YES” to customers because a happy customer will come back.

EVERY STARBUCKS should accept this. “Inform a barista” if you get rejected: that It’s part of the Starbucks Mission Statement is just “say Yes.”

  60. Well I did ask, and at least in Canada it’s not valid. They have never heard of it.

It does say “participating stores only” so if your store has never heard of it, it’s a given that it is not a “participating store.”

I know it’s just a coffee, but seriously, this does not appear to be real; it appears to be a fake by someone who knows Photoshop and Starbucks policy, and god knows there are no shortage of those. Not only does it strongly appear to be a fraud (albeit a good one) but look at the comments; it’s not getting coffee that people want into the hands of people who wouldn’t otherwise go without. It’s drawing people who are getting malevolent jollies at the thought of ripping someone off.

If this were my blog, I’d contact Starbucks.com and ask. And if they said they’d never heard of it I’d take it down, although now that it’s been digged, it’s a little bit barn door, horse, all that routine.

  61. Not sure why my last comment went kablooie, but here’s what Starbucks Canada says: They’ve never heard of this coupon.

So it’s not good in Canada; and an attempt to use it there is an attempt at fraud.

Haven’t heard from Starbucks US yet, but I will draw your attention to the words on the coupon, “Participating Starbucks only”. If your store has never heard of it, it’s a safe bet it’s not participating. So using it there is fraud, too. Unless they know what it is and accept it because it’s a promotion they’re participating in, you’re ripping off the company. They may go along with it (I worked there; they do, rather than cause a scene) but that doesn’t make it right.

Besides, look at the comments here; I would have to say that, by and large, this is not getting iced coffee into the hands of people who are enthusiastic about that. It’s helping some malevolent cruisers rip off a company for thrills. Seriously, I don’t see this as a positive thing at all.

Starbucks fired my ass ten years ago; I don’t owe them a thing. But this just doesn’t feel right. There is too much aggro all over this thing.

Like bort, I contacted Starbucks directly; anyone can do it, the phone number is on their site.

It was a mistake to print the date the way they did, but Starbucks says it is THEIR mistake and they will honour the coupons. It was supposed to be for “you and two friends” but of course emails get passed around.

The coupon is good for an Iced Coffee drink, not a frappucchino. If you like things sweeter, ask for a shot of flavoured syrup or some liquid sugar, and add some milk; I prefer skim in iced drinks.

If you don’t like iced coffee, or don’t like Starbucks, don’t use the coupon. Very simple, really.

  82. This is legit. I have used this every day since Friday. I called customer service today to confirm what the deal is. It SHOULD have been a hand-out to friends-and-family in the Southeast (Atlanta marketing effort). HOWEVER, it was instead e-mailed and now of course it’s everywhere. Enjoy while it lasts – as of now Starbucks is advising its retail stores to honor the coupon. Enjoy.

  83. I used one today. The lady at StarBucks said it’s an internet scam, but they will honor it anyways. Eitherway… Iced Coffee is just downright NASTY. It does taste burnt. And I waited 5 minutes cause they were brewing “Fresh” coffee. Eh. I’ll stick to the free Mud Water we have at work.

  84. I used the coupon today and they accepted it. They said if it did not have a code then they couldn’t. However if you look close there is a code Barista 113 bottom right of coupon. I added sugar a dash of cinnamon and creamer and it was great!!!!

  86. don’t really care who thinks this is a scam or fake or junk coffee, etc…i’ve used it at TWO different locations so far, no questions asked. if anyone has doubts, just try it. the worst thing that could happen is you tell them you want to use it and they say no.

Unfortunately, it has been redistributed beyond the original intent and modified beyond Starbucks control. Effective immediately, this offer will no longer be valid at any Starbucks locations.

The company said an e-mail offering a free Starbucks iced coffee was sent to a limited group of employees in the southeast on August 23 with instructions to forward it to friends and family.

In July, Starbucks posted its weakest monthly same-store sales increase since 2001, saying heavy demand for cold drinks like Frappuccinos slowed service during busy morning hours, prompting customers to go elsewhere for their daily jolt.

and for the record, i’d love to see companies post more press releases on pages that end with the “rumor=true” tag.

  98. This promotion and the way it got out of control demonstrates how unbelievably greedy people are. Just because you can get something for free doesn’t mean you should.

  99. I’m a store manager for Starbucks in the DC area, and I have always personally taken coupons that I even know to be legit because 80 percent of the people bringing them in just had it forwarded to them and don’t realize it’s not real. If I tell them I won’t accept it, it puts the onus on them, makes them feel embarassed, and certainly they’re disappointed. They may not come back. Would I rather give away $1 worth of product to avoid this? Of course.

This coupon, however, was getting way out of control, and I wasn’t sad when I was tolk I could put the kibosh on it. I apologize profusely when I turn people away, but still…. one thing the Sbux haters should consider – yes, the company has a ton of money. But my salary is based in part on how well my store does. I’m no greedy capitalit, (I’m a democrat!) but I like for my wife and daughter to have the things we need. So when I have to give away significant amounts of free product, that is ultimately going to effect my bonuses. When people steal from my store (not implying the coupon is stealing, but more thinking about the folks who walk out with loads of merchandise and/or beans), they are stealing from me first, not Starbucks.
